Energy price developments

How much will I be paying for my energy?

Buildings with a central gas connection are supplied via a contract that Stadswonen (Woonstad Rotterdam) has with Eneco. The current three-year contract, in which gas is fixed at €0.61 per m3, runs till the end of 2022. We are currently negotiating a new contract for 2023. The price will definitely be higher, but the exact rate is not yet known.

Buildings connected to the district heating system are also supplied via Eneco, but in this case the purchasing and price setting is done by Eneco themselves, as part of an arrangement covering the whole of Rotterdam. However, Eneco is bound by a price cap set by The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets. The price of district heating doubled in 2022. The tariff for 2023 is not yet known, but we expect a further increase.

Energy suppliers usually announce their new tariffs at the end of January. You'll hear from us as soon as we know more!

When will the new prices start to affect me?

We settle the annual balance for service costs in May/June each year, after checking whether the total cost of the energy you actually used was higher or lower than the total of your monthly energy payments to us. If necessary, we then adjust your monthly payments for the following year. Due to the rising energy prices, we already know that the amount you’re currently paying is unlikely to be enough to cover the cost of the energy you’ll consume after 1 January 2023. This means you will almost certainly receive an additional bill after the May/June year-end, and your monthly energy payments will also rise accordingly from July 2023.

Am I going to get a large bill in May/June to make up the difference?

Due to the high energy prices, we already know that your advance payments are out-of-line with energy costs from1 January 2023. You will probably have to pay extra to make up the difference for the first half of 2023, and need to pay a higher monthly advance from July 2023.

You will still receive money from the government to offset the high energy prices via the shared connection allowance scheme. We do not yet know how much you’ll get. Once we have all the necessary details, we’ll be able to calculate the amount per tenant, at which point we will contact you. We do know this allowance will not fully offset the amount by which the cost of energy has increased. You will therefore still end up having to pay more.

Do you make a profit from my energy payments?

No, we do not earn anything ourselves from your energy payments. We only re-charge you the actual costs invoiced from suppliers, in accordance with agreed service costs rulings.
