Moving on and moving in together

Can I move to a different room?

Do you want to move to another room within your unit? Then discuss this first with the other tenants. Is everyone OK with it? If so, you still need to re-register in Stadswonen Portal and pay a one-off €15 administration fee. But you don’t have to apply for the room – just contact Stadswonen Rotterdam to let us know about the swap.

Do you want to move to a different type of accommodation, for example from a room to a studio for students? This is possible as long as you’re still studying. We allocate these prioritised by length of time already renting from us (x2) (existing tenants) and by waiting time (non-tenants).

Can I move to a different accommodation?

If you’re already renting from us, you can  easily move to a different accommodation.

Moving while still studying
If you’re already renting from us, you can move to another room or studio as long as you’re still studying. We allocate these prioritised by length of time already renting from us (x2) (existing tenants) and by waiting time (non-tenants).

An example
>A tenant has been renting from us since 1 January 2017. On 1 January 2019, the duration of their tenancy is 2 years. But we double this, bringing the total to 4 years
>A non-tenant registered with us on 1 January 2017. On 1 January 2019 their waiting time is 2 years.

We therefore allocate the accommodation to the existing tenant, because their length of residence, when doubled, is longer than the non-tenant’s waiting time.

Moving after finishing your studies
If you are already renting from us and are going to work after finishing your education, you can apply for our apartments. We rent these to existing tenants aged between 23 and 27, who have income from work. You will get a limited-term contract for a maximum of five years. We assign available apartments to tenants with the longest period of residence

Older than 27?
Are you older than 27? Then there are other ways to find accommodation in Rotterdam.

How do I move to a different accommodation?

If you want to move to another accommodation, you don't need to re-register. Apply for the room, studio or apartment you want by responding to the relevant advertisement. Be sure to first check that you’re eligible. The conditions are included in each advertisement.

Can I move in with my partner?

Rooms

It’s not common for two or more rooms in a residential building or on a floor to become available at precisely the same time. The best chance for you and your friend or partner to live together in the same building or on the same floor is when one of you is already a resident. The next time a room becomes available in the building, the existing resident opts for selection by ballot (called hospiteren in Dutch). His or her friend is then free to respond to the advertised room. If the candidate is high enough on the list, the existing resident is allowed to choose this candidate as his or her new housemate. Of course, in cases where multiple housemates are involved, the decision will naturally need to be taken in consultation. Please keep in mind that the person responding to the advert has to have a high enough spot on the waiting list to be eligible as a candidate.

Studios

The maximum occupancy for a studio unit is one person. In other words, you are not allowed to live together with someone else in a studio.

Flats

You are allowed to live together in one of our flats. This is based on the assumption that you will be living together with your partner. If you prefer to live together with a friend or family member rather than a partner, please keep in mind that some flats are more suited to this kind of arrangement than others. This information is included in the details on flats that are listed as available on our website.

To qualify for a post-study apartment, one of you must already be renting from us. If you want to live together in a student apartment, one of you must be registered with us as an accommodation seeker. You can ask to arrange cohabitation with a partner via the Stadswonen Portal.

Be aware: Cohabiting can have consequences for any rent subsidy or other allowances you receive. More information about this can be found on the tax office website.
