Moving on and moving in together

Can I move to a different accommodation?

It’s easy to move to another Stadswonen Rotterdam accommodation. First, you’ll need to re-register via Stadswonen Portal and pay a one-off €15 administration fee to start building up waiting time again. As an existing Stadswonen tenant, your waiting time will accumulate faster than it does for non-tenants.

How do I move to a different accommodation?

When you sign a rental agreement with us, the waiting time you’ve accumulated automatically expires. If you (will eventually) want to move to another of our accommodations, the smart thing to do is to re-register in Stadswonen Portal right away, so you start building up waiting time again. There is a one-off €15 administration charge for this. As an existing tenant, you’ll accumulate waiting time faster than non-tenants. This sets the ball in motion for you to move on to a home that (better) suits your needs as circumstances change. The accommodation you vacate then becomes available to a new tenant.

Can I move to a different room?

Do you want to move to another room within your unit? Then discuss this first with the other tenants. Is everyone OK with it? If so, you still need to re-register in Stadswonen Portal and pay a one-off €15 administration fee. But you don’t have to apply for the room – just contact Stadswonen Rotterdam to let us know about the swap.

Do you want to move to a different type of accommodation, for example from a room to a studio? Then you need to re-register via MyStadswonen and pay a one-off €15 administration fee. As an existing tenant, you’ll accumulate waiting time faster than non-tenants.

Can I move in with my partner?

Living together is sometimes allowed, depending on the type of home you’re renting:

Living together in a Stadswonen apartment Living together with your partner is permitted in all our apartments. If you want to share with a friend or family member, rather than a partner, then it’s worth considering that some apartments are more suitable for this than others. The relevant information is shown in our property descriptions. Only one of the proposed cohabitants needs to be registered with us. So if you are registered with Stadswonen, the person you want to share with doesn’t need to be. If you want to share with another person, please apply to do so via Stadswonen Portal. We’ll let you know as soon as possible whether your home is suitable for cohabitation and what further information we need.

Be aware! Cohabiting can have consequences for any rent subsidy or other allowances you receive. More information about this can be found on the tax office website.

Sharing a Stadswonen studio  Studios are only suitable for single occupancy, so you cannot share one of these with anyone else. If you want to move in with a partner, friend or relative, check out our broad selection of apartments. To qualify for these, you need to make sure you re-register via Stadswonen Portal.

Sharing a Stadswonen room  Rooms are only suitable for single occupancy, but you can share a unit with your partner / friend / relative if you each have your own room. However, two rooms in the same unit rarely become available at the same time. Your best chance of getting to live in the same unit comes if one of you already lives there and the other has accumulated a lot of waiting time as an accommodation seeker. When a room becomes available in your unit, it will be offered to those with the longest waiting time and, if the building operates an interview policy, to whoever the existing tenants prefer. If this doesn’t work out, you can move into one of Stadswonen’s apartments. To qualify for these, you need to make sure you’re re-registered via Stadswonen Portal.

What do I need to do if I want to share with another person?

If you want to live with your partner / friend / relative, you’ll need to share an apartment together, as our rooms and studios are only suitable for single occupancy. So if you’re already in one of our rooms or studios and want to share, you’ll need to move. To be eligible for applying for our apartments, you need to be re-registered as an accommodation seeker.

If two of you want to live together, only one of you needs to be registered with us. So if you’re already registered with Stadswonen, your partner / friend / relative doesn’t need to be. You can apply to share an apartment via Stadswonen Portal. We’ll respond as soon as possible to let you know whether your chosen accommodation is suitable for cohabitation and what further information we need.

Be aware! Cohabiting can have consequences for any rent subsidy or other allowances you receive. More information about this can be found on the tax office website.
